Understanding CNS metastasis
The central nervous system or CNS is comprised of the brain and spinal cord and controls most functions of the body and mind.
Brain metastasis and leptomeningeal disease are collectively referred to as central nervous system or CNS metastasis.
Metastasis from breast cancer to the CNS most commonly occurs as brain metastasis. It can also become leptomeningeal disease (LMD), which is metastasis to the lining of the brain and spinal cord.
Brain tumors that originate in the brain and not the breast are called primary brain tumors, and may include meningiomas, gliomas, and glioblastomas, among others. Brain metastasis from breast cancer are treated differently than tumors that originate in the brain. However, there are some treatment modalities including radiation, surgery, and chemotherapies that work effectively in both.
